Porcelain Veneers
- Many cosmetic problems can be resolved with the
use of porcelain veneers. Things like chips, gaps
and stains can all be
corrected with veneers. The process takes two visits, separated by approximately
three weeks. We will first prepare the tooth or teeth by removing a thin layer
of enamel from the front and side surfaces. Then we will take an impression of
the prepared area which is sent to a laboratory where the veneer will be made.
The second visit simply involves bonding the veneer into place. Although
porcelain veneers are very strong and resist future discoloration and chipping,
they are not ideal for patients with severe bite problems or for those who grind
their teeth.

Bonding - By using a composite resin (tooth colored plastic), bonding can
be a less expensive alternative to porcelain veneers (see porcelain veneers).
The procedure is similar, however a laboratory is not involved. Chips, gaps and
stains can all be corrected with bonding which then gives the patient a more
aesthetically pleasing smile. Bonding is not a permanent solution, however, as
it is not as strong as porcelain veneers. Depending on your oral habits it
can last up to ten years or more, before requiring a new treatment.

Bleaching -
The most popular technique in recent
years to create a whiter, brighter smile has been cosmetic bleaching. We offer
an at-home bleaching system. Patients who do the at-home system will come in for a
couple of visits.
During the first visit we take impressions of the top and bottom teeth; this is
what we use to make the custom fit bleaching trays. At the next visit, we will
deliver the trays, which hold the bleaching gel, and deliver the bleaching
material itself. The patient then wears the
trays either at night while sleeping
or during the day for as little as one half hour. The process is usually complete within two to three weeks.

Contouring -
Contouring can be used when a patient wants to change either
an uneven height of their gumline or to reshape the physical appearance of a
tooth or teeth. Examples of reshaping might be making small teeth larger, large
teeth smaller or perhaps square teeth round. We can also use a simple procedure
known as "electro-surgery" which removes excess tissue, thereby
creating an even appearance at the gumline. Whatever method is needed, the goal
is to create an overall proportionate look to the smile.
